Athiyan, the Superintendent of Police in Kanyakumari district, is a renowned encounter specialist, known as “Vettaiyan” for capturing and encountering criminals with the help of his team and a Horlicks-loving ex-con turned police informant “Battery” Patrick, who is also a techie.

Vettaiyaan is the classic commercial avatar of our very own Rajinikanth aka Thalaivar by TJ Gnanavel. Though there is a slight lag in the first half, the film has all the elements that Gnanavel is known for: social issues woven into the screenplay, twists and turns in the plot and emotional moments that keep the audience hooked. Though some may find parts of the plot predictable, as is common in commercial films, the director has introduced unexpected surprises that keep the audiences hooked.
Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that the superstar would play a character that is so different from the norm, because he can and will always do that. But not here, the director has made sure to look at Inspector Athiyan in a completely different light
The first 20 minutes of the film are actually just like any Rajinikanth mass masala film, but we are not disappointed because we know it should be like that! But after that surprising turn of events we question our decision and from there onwards the film does not disappoint at all.
